Governor Dean: 'Shame on Them'

Governor Howard Dean sent a note to Democrats across the country on the swift-boat style attacks against Congressman John Murtha. You can write a letter to Congressman Murtha, encouraging him to stand strong and thanking him for his courage. The letters will be personally delivered by Governor Dean.
ACTION: Write a Letter to Congressman Murtha
Dear Friend,
I want to tell you about John Murtha. He's a Democratic Congressman from Pennsylvania. He's also a combat veteran and retired Marine Corps colonel.
Murtha spent 37 years in Marine Corps, earned the Bronze Star, two purple hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. And for the last thirty years he's been one of the most respected voices in Congress on military issues -- universally respected by Democrats, Republicans and military brass alike.
Until now.
Republicans have disgraced themselves by viciously attacking John Murtha with such disrespect that not only veterans, but every decent American should be angry.
What did Murtha, a decorated combat veteran, do to draw fire from a White House led by a president and vice president who evaded service in Vietnam? He questioned their management of the war in Iraq. Here's part of what he had to say:
"The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion. The American public is way ahead of us. The United States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq, but it is time for a change in direction. Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf Region. ...
"For two and a half years, I have been concerned about the U.S. policy and the plan in Iraq. I have addressed my concerns with the Administration and the Pentagon and have spoken out in public about my concerns. The main reason for going to war has been discredited. ...
"I have been visiting our wounded troops at Bethesda and Walter Reed hospitals almost every week since the beginning of the War. And what demoralizes them is going to war with not enough troops and equipment to make the transition to peace; the devastation caused by IEDs; being deployed to Iraq when their homes have been ravaged by hurricanes; being on their second or third deployment and leaving their families behind without a network of support.
Shameless Republicans immediately went on the attack. Dick Cheney, who has said that he had "other priorities" and collected 5 deferments while people like Murtha served in Vietnam, called Murtha's comments "irresponsible" and regretted that "the president and I cannot prevent certain politicians from losing their memory, or their backbone." The White House spokesman, who has also never worn the uniform, pronounced himself "baffled" that Murtha, who volunteered for two wars, wanted to "surrender to the terrorists". A Republican Congressman said Murtha and others "basically are giving aid and comfort to the enemy".
Shame on them. Every one of us -- right now -- needs to let Jack Murtha know that we respect his service, respect his leadership, and respect his right to speak the truth. This man has spent his life serving us. The very least each one of us can do is let him know that no matter what dishonorable smear campaign Republicans wage we will be there with him.
Send Congressman Murtha a note telling him that you will not be silent while he is attacked:
http://www.democrats.org/shameonthem
I will deliver your message to him personally, along with my own thanks for his service to our country and his continuing courage in the face of threats.
Lies and manipulation characterized the Republican case for war, and lies and manipulation have been the primary weapon against anyone who questions their failed leadership.
First it was Senator Max Cleland, who left limbs in Vietnam, being savagely attacked in 2002. Then John Kerry, who received three purple hearts, being smeared in 2004. The history of this war has shown that Republicans value political posturing more than the service of America's veterans.
Republicans don't want a serious debate about Iraq because they know the American people are simply not with them. They cannot respond to the substance of Murtha's criticism -- or any criticism -- because they are wrong.
Jack Murtha is already fighting back. When told of Cheney's comments he reminded people where Cheney was while he was in Vietnam: "I like guys who got five deferments and have never been there and send people to war, and then don't like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done."
But Jack can't beat this back alone. Show him that Americans know that Republicans should be ashamed of themselves:
http://www.democrats.org/shameonthem
Enough is enough -- we cannot allow another veteran to be smeared by George Bush's cronies.
Thank you for taking a stand.
Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Mr. Dean, I would also like to see many many more democrats on TV, on the radio stations, etc, decrying this disgraceful display of politics that the House of Representatives put on tonight, and that the Republicans have been splashing all over the media networks.
We have to stand strong, loud, and together.
Thank You, Veronica Plain

Dr. Dean,
What I want to know is how long it will take for the party to endorse Rep. Murtha's policy position on immediate withdrawal and an end to U.S. occupation.
I've posted an entry on both the Friday open thread and the blog on the topic of Rep. Murtha. I'm happy to elaborate on the views briefly presented in this blog-entry.
This whole notion of the U.S. somehow creating a stable (enough) democratic government in what is called "Iraq," is simply a hothouse concoction by the neo cons. It's time the party realized that such a policy course is plainly untenable, without any historical precedent or support, and then separated itself from such pie-in-the-sky ideas (masking imperial ambitions).
We arrived in Iraq in dishonor, and we shall leave the same way -- there is no plausible expectation or prospect that U.S. blood and treasure will be the glue that holds "Iraq" together.
Please take a look at my quick-sketch blog entries and let's have a talk. I'm on my county central committee, and have backed you all along with letters and calls. This will be your toughest assignment to date --- get our party to endorse Rep. Murtha's -- patriotic -- call on this topic.
I don't need to hear about what **** the Republicans are. * You can bet that Rep. Murtha isn't bothered by them getting all lathered up. In fact, from his comments about Cheney, I'd say Rep. Murtha's having a good time with moving the cause of authentic morality, genuine justice, and true national interest. Let's all have that good a time. What do you say?
Let's get some work done.
I hope to hear from you, my friend.
Warm Regards,
Mark Tide

I read the blog article on this site on Congresswoman Schmidt (who I hope, loses next year).
She deliberately attacked Murtha. She says that we should stay the course?
No way, Jose. The troops need to come home now. And judging from the fact that next month marks 2 months since Saddam's capture, we've almost completed our mission. If there ever was a time to say "Mission Accomplished," it should be when Saddam gets put to death.

To: Democratic Party Chairman
Gov. Howard Dean and
Senators & Reps.
Dear Gov. Dean and others,
I want to start out by saying I use to be a republican, my family as well. However, this administration has completely turned me around. Maybe I should not say I was a republican, I have always voted the man and not the party. In 2000 it was Gore I voted for, I was sickened to see Bush appointed President. I have never in my life been so concerned with politics as I am now. It takes a lot to get me this worked up, but Cheney and Bush have done it, along with their whole party.
At This time democrats have a super opportunity to make things happen. I continually write to my Senator, and Representatives in Washington, but it does no good. I implore you, Please set a direction for all democrats to follow. America, and its citizens should come First, above all other countries, and their citizens. The current administration plan in Iraq is going exactly as planned. They want us bogged down and going no place so they, Cheney & Bush can make their Billions on this war. I think Bush is to stupid to have thought it all up, but Cheney is not, that is why he pushed so hard for this war, and all democrats need to point this out, Loud and Clear. Hold people responsible for their actions, Cheney & Bush do not. If one of the old rich boy club is in trouble, they do and say anything they can to skirt the issues. Do not let them do this. It is time for you all to Attack, Yes, hit them when they are down, they would do it to you and not think twice. Even one of their senator's say we need campaign finance reform, get them on that two... Stand for something, or you all we keep falling on your faces.
You are at such a great time and place to slam this administration on the war in Iraq, connected to the CIA leak, and to Haliburton, they are all linked, I guarantee you. Bring out the facts on how Haliburton is cheating the Government, and the fact that republicans, who control the Congress, do not want any Over Site. They do not want any over site because the republican leaders do not represent the People, they represent the rich and powerful. Bring out the facts on our huge deficit, the fact it has never been so high, and Bush got it there in record time. It is not the fault of hurricanes. It is due to giving the Billionaires, and millionaires the biggest Tax Breaks in history. The administration would not let the military deploy more troops in Iraq because it would cause the war to end to fast, saving us money in the long run. Rumsfeld would not allow the extra troops, but he could make sure all retiring generals got a high paying job with Haliburton. They want their Billions !!! That is what is driving this war, nothing else. Are democrats now making so much money on this that they, you, will not stand up for us, the lowly citizen?
I have watched the news, and paid close attention to the current history of this country sense 9-11. I know the major news companies have supported Bush every step of the way, showing NO opposing views. I have caught some things. Bush claiming to be this super Christian, but I have never seen him at church, or praying. I heard Bush say on TV, from his own mouth, that one thing that made him very angry on 9-11 was the fact he could not talk continually with Cheney on board Air Force One. I thought, you are the leader, why did he need to talk to Cheney so much, because he is to scared to take the rains of power. I heard on PBS’s Charlie Rose program today, that the President was told by Colin Powell that he would own Iraq if we went in and broke them. It goes to show, they thought no further than their own pocketbook. Almost anyone that is for the war, is making money off of it some how. PBS, by the way, is the only news source I can go to and get a nonpartisan view on anything. The news channel msnbc is the worse of all, that is one place democrats need to go with the truth, you can not lose if you have truth on your side...
You ALL need to start asking the hard questions. Who is getting rich from this war, who had the most to gain. Why hasn’t the Iraqi people started taking charge of their own country? Why are we giving them everything at our expense? Why can’t they pay in oil, what is so wrong with that? Didn’t other arab countries help pay a substantial part of the first gulf war? What did Cheney have to do with the CIA leak case? How much does he stand to gain by Haliburton cheating the Government in this war? Who is blocking the hard questions, and why? Why can’t Government whistle blowers have a right to do so? Does all parties in Washington have that much to hide?
Please, Please, start doing your job as the opposite party in office, or is it to late for your party? I am saying Great Job, to those who are starting to do this kinds of things. Please Keep It Up!!! I will do anything I can to help, ANYTHING. Please, respond to this letter, and send it to all Democrats in Washington D.C., Especially the ones I see on C-span....... I was a police officer most of my adult life, now retired to Arizona, so I see everything through those eyes, says my family. I know who had the most to gain by this war, Cheney or Haliburton same thing. Who had the motive, Cheney. Who had the opportunity, Cheney. Who had the means, Cheney. Who wants to keep torture going, Cheney. Who wants all the tax breaks for the rich, at the poor’s expense, Cheney, and Bush !!! Cheney, and Rumsfeld war plan is going just the way they want it, it keeps going, making their friends, who they will work for after they are out of office, Billions of our dollars.
Good Job to all those Democrats I saw today on c-span, keep it up, lets get back in office and find the truth!!! Why won’t the republicans allow a debate, because they do not want the truth to come out. You Must say you are willing to do anything to defend our Great Country, and stand behind what you say, not whish-e-washy.... Please, respond back to me with your views. That way I have something to say to my republican friends. Thank You for your service!
Sincerely,

cnn question for e-mail responses what is the meaning of the rejection of the immediate pullout by Congress? I argue that it was another set up vote like the one that took us to war. Add your voice.
