Governor Dean on the 5th Anniversary of 9/11

Posted by on September 11, 2006 at 01:07 PM

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement commemorating the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks:

"As we mark the fifth anniversary of the tragic attacks against our country, we honor the memories of the brave men and women who lost their lives that day and the families and friends of those who mourn them. Today is a day to reflect on the grief and loss we experienced as Americans but it's also a time to renew our commitment to fight and win the war on terror at home and around the globe. On September 11, the world unified around America and saw the strong spirit and resiliency of the American people. Today, we must renew our call to protect our airports, ports and transit systems and do everything possible to keep Americans safe from harm."

I read Senator Joe Biden's response to Rumsfeld's remarks to troops headed to Iraq. When asked about the lack of body armor by some of the troopers, Rumsfeld gave what could only be regarded by fighting men as a chickenshit, gutless answer. Joe Biden tore him up rather well on it. I've said it before, Rumsfeld needs to go to Iraq and lead a Marine foot patrol "on the point" and show all of us "appeasers" just how brave he really is and just how much he believes in this war.....Likewise, Gov. Deab's remarks were right on target.

Ms. Robinson,

I think it is important for you to know that the Disney/ABC television program, The Path to 9/11, which began airing last night, is inaccurate and irresponsible in its portrayal of the airport check-in events that occurred on the morning of September 11, 2001. A factual description of those events can be found in the official government edition of the 9/11 Commission Report and supporting documents.

Please know this was a tragic event in our company’s history and we hope you will be sympathetic to our employees and our airline on this day. Again, we are outraged by this situation, and we alerted ABC about its gross error. It is very unfortunate.

Dean knows of George Lakoff's work -- so I wish he'd stop using Republican's language like "War on Terror".

Also -- let's use today as an opportunity to find the real truth behind the attacks ... how could 19 guys operating out of a cave across the world completely deactivate the defense systems that have protected us from errant airplanes for years before. The 9/11 commission report was written by a stacked, partisan committee and it's a whitewash. I think that the best way to honor the dead would be to find everybody who is accountable -- foreign and domestic -- and put them on trial.

Time for a boycott of all republican businesses!Let's give these theocratic subversives so much shame that they fear to lose their livelyhoods. The republicans have been doing it to us for over five years and it's time to pull the rug out from under them. When I see a person or a business that openly supports republicans,I go out of my way to berate and belittle them for shamelessly supporting the right-wing agenda of the "ugly red americans".If we all did this the country would be freed of their immoral and unethical practices. If the democrats of pre-war Germany had done this Hitler would never have risen to power!

I thank Dr Dean for providing this opportunity to pay our respects online.

My thoughts today are for me friend's nephew who was killed in the line of duty as a New York Firefighter. God Bless you Steve. Also for a lady I once knew who worked at the Pentagon. Mrs. A - your smile was always kind, and I remember your apple cake. God Bless you as well.

May we never forget those who died that day, and may we continue to do all we can to make sure we never again have to face such horror.

The saddest part of having a date of Sept 11, 2001 is that five years later we still don't have a date to celebrate victory. We should have learned from when we were attacked at Pearl Harbor it took ALL of the resources of this country to go after those that attacked us. Luckily we didn't have this administration in office because the war with Japan would probably still be going on with about 130 thousand of our military on the front line with the trumpet call of "stay the course". I'm a liberal and I'm proud to be one. I am also a veteran and proud to have served my country. As a liberal, I think war is the last resort. However, also as a liberal, when we reach the point of last resort and there are no options but war, we should use every resource including every able body soul to win the war. It takes the sacrifice of a country to win a war, not the sacrifice of a few. There are too many that think just talking about supporting our troops is sacrifice enough. Maybe it would have taken a draft, a raise in taxes, and an occupation of several countries to win this war, but it would have been over by now and we would have a date to celebrate the victory. Instead all we have to look forward to is a date when our enemies go nuclear as we stay the course.

ER,

we have been trying to buy only from 'Blue friendly' companies for the last few years.

here is one of the several good Buy Blue sites:

if you want info on a particular candidate, go to www.Opensecrets.org for information on companies and PACs which donate to them.

Thanks PamB,I'll definitely put that info to use and redirect some of my money to more deserving companies! It's too bad though that the effect of that only hurts the bottom line of a faceless nameless entity.I still think that a local effort to put shame on people who support the right-wing can be much more effective. The shifting sands of political influence will always attract corporate dollars but the people who have been personally confronted will never recover from the demoralizing effects. These individuals will be insecure in their business and personal dealings for many years.Five years of fear-mongering must be collected at their expense. If we all stand up for our values we can shut down the right-wing or at least relegate them to the lunatic fringe for at least a generation.(I think USN6872 is already there!)

ER and Pam B,
Perhaps, on this day, of all days, you could refrain from partisan cheap shots. "i go out of of my way to belittle them." Yep, that's what freedom is all about; belittling those who think differently than you do. Really nice ER. Shame on you.

Al Queada doesn't want us dead. They just want us to butt out of their lives. We keep installing dictators in that region and help them stay in power, while they quell any dissent for free elections with an iron hand.

For all of Bush's talk of democracy, look at how he reacted when Hammas won the election in Palestine? He immediately took steps to destroy the new government with sanctions. Blair has finally realized the it was a stupid move and is backing away.

Same thing in Lebanon. The Christians and Hezbalah were working it out in a coalition government, but Bush pushed the new, inexperienced Israeli Prime Minister into trying to stop it with a hasty, ill conceived war...using more bogus intel provided by Rumsfeld and his same do-it-on the cheap, without a plan once-you-get-there approach.

If we ever got serious about alternative fuels, we could leave the Muslims alone to fight it out amongst themselves. The only reason the renegades have turned to radical jhadist rheteric is because it brings out the big dollar donations from Islamic fundamentalists in oil producing nations to fund their guerilla war.

Get off the Axis of Evil bandwagon. It's a real losing strategy. We have lost the confidence of our allies and made more enemies than we can handle since this crap was allowed to be spewed on the world scene. Bush acts as silly as Nikita Krushchev.

The only reason al Queda hasn't attacked us is because George is doing such a good job of undermining our credibility all on his own. Why waste resources here, when they can use them against the dictatorships in the Persian Gulf which are their real targets?

My take on GW's speech (which I did not watch, but read the transcript)
1-look for big push before the election on his latest legislation (I call save my ass) - make legal what I did with secret detainments in foreign countries -- Why weren't these people brought to justice in American courts? The attack came on American soil.
2. More controlled intelligence reports on Iran.
Is it true Valerie Plame was head of CIA Iraq WMD division? Is that why Bushes said she arranged for Joe Wilson's trip?
3. GW does not want to go down in history as the President who divided Irag and allowed Iran to get the nuclear bomb.
4. Draft coming? Volunteer army phrase used again in speech.
5. Can he convince Bin Laden family to give up Osama before November election?

Bottom line - grab you a** - GW and Rove will be hitting hard and dirty

This action in Iraq has been poorly managed, we have lost 2700 of our brave, dedicated young people. We have spent 400 BILLION of the taxpayers money that could have been used for health care, or the staggering debt we are leaving for our children could have been lowered. The legacy of this administration is to leave this mess for the next administration.

Hey EricSmith I don't belittle anyone for thinking! It's the people who refuse to think and the resulting bigotry and hatred they embrace that deserves my ire!I have absolutely no feelings of shame for turning my town, county, and soon my state blue! And on this day in particular your sheepish attitude is exactly the reason the right-wing has blossomed in this country. Why do you support immoral and unethical behavior?Perhaps your lifestyle is such that you don't have the moral high ground from which to condemn these societal criminals.I do live on a mountain of virtue that makes a religious person fear me.In my town I have a reputation of stellar proportion that makes my judgement unimpeachable! It's a power that has to be earned by actions that the vast majority has no interest in.Try living a virtuous life and you'll understand.

Do the Iraqi people not deserve freedom, or has the world leftist made-for-media throng so abandoned their own brief history of compassion that anything that smacks of an American victory against anarchy and terrorism seems to them tainted?

Would a President Gore have left Saddam in power, after 9-11? Granted, his 8 years as VEEP did little to deter Bin Laden, or Saddam - and Clinton's limp responses to viable threats (when did Yugoslavia threaten us?) may have in fact emboldened terrorists everywhere.

The only concrete mistake in Iraq is this: Not having removed Saddam and his Baathist thugs and terror enablers after Gulf I. The TV pictures of his "army" being wasted by U.S. troops on the road back to Baghdad so horrified the pacifism-at-any-cost crowd and other Carter-esque populist fence sitters (now known as Deaniacs) that the more decent end result was sadly postponed until 12+ years later. Plenty of blame to go around for that, and the additional deaths that have resulted.

Mistakes are made in the defense of freedom and in freeing slaves, as in any conflict of merit - but allowing another Rwanda or Tibet to happen in Iraq, or anywhere else long accustomed to dictators and colluding U.N. cowards, is simply not in the cards.

= Thanks To America's Armed Forces =

PS: First responders are swell. Killing terrorists and freeing slaves will definitely lighten their work load, at home and abroad.

Where do these people come from?President Clinton had Sadam Hussein well controlled with the no fly zone.Sadam was between a rock and a hard place. Why would he want to go in an put Iraq completely out of balance when he didn`t have to.He had him exactly where he wanted him.Do you really think that war is all ways the answer?Besides that coming on line here thinking you are going to stir it up is a waste of your time.Bye-Bye

The Saddam status quo - paying bombers to attack Americans and allies in pizza parlors and university lounges, rape rooms and kiddie jails as spur of the moment ruler enforcement, importing arms from North Korea via Syria and Yemen, drying up river beds that displaced hundreds of thousands of poor people and killed untold acres of wetlands, colluding under the media's turned cheek with the U.N.'s bogus oil-for-EU crooks program - that's what you'd defend?

Harry Truman must be flipping in his grave.
