As January 6 Hearings Begin, A Reminder MAGA Republicans Tried To Overturn The Election To Cling To Power

On January 6, MAGA Republicans stormed the U.S. Capitol and attacked our democracy after Donald Trump spent his last weeks in office pushing dangerous and unhinged conspiracy theories about the 2020 election in a desperate attempt to cling to power. But MAGA Republicans didn’t stop there. They have not only downplayed the attacks that took place that day but continue to undermine our democracy and make it harder to vote in hopes of taking power.

Republicans sold their soul to Donald Trump long before January 6, but they made clear they’re loyal MAGA Republicans who would do anything to gain power as they continued to defend Trump even after he incited a violent attack.

CNN: “McCarthy has backtracked on Trump’s role in the insurrection as recently as this week, when he was criticized at his most recent news conference for saying he didn’t believe Trump ‘provoked’ the insurrection ‘if you listen to what he said at the rally’ — after saying two weeks earlier that Trump bears responsibility.”

New York Times: “Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, was so appalled by Donald Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 attack that he signaled to colleagues shortly afterward that he was open to convicting Trump in an impeachment trial — and barring him from holding office again. A month later, however, McConnell voted to acquit him.”

Washington Post: “Publicly, McCarthy and the Republican Party have continued to show widespread obeisance to Trump, fearful of drawing his wrath or having his supporters turn on them.”

MAGA Republicans didn’t stop with January 6. Across the country and in Congress, they continue to promote Trump’s Big Lie, undermine our democracy, and “throw tantrums” instead of actually getting things done — reminding voters how they’re too extreme and dangerous to be in power.

Politico: “But the Freedom Caucus is known for exerting its leverage to push Republican leadership to the right – if not outright tanking legislative efforts. The narrower the GOP majority next year, the more power that the pro-Trump group may have to disrupt.”

While MAGA Republicans are doing everything they can to restrict the right to vote, Democrats are investing in protecting the right to vote and making sure every eligible voter can make their voice heard.
