DNC on Transgender Day of Visibility

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, DNC LGBTQ Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes, and the National Center for Transgender Equality Action Fund released the following statement on Transgender Day of Visibility:

“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to transgender and non-binary Americans and celebrate the many contributions they make to our country. From the arts to activism, to our armed forces and the highest levels of government, transgender and non-binary people are valued members of society and play an essential role in pushing our nation closer toward progress.

“Instead of focusing on protecting and delivering for all Americans, extremist Republicans across the country are fixated on targeting transgender people and their families, determined to strip away their rights and freedoms that all Americans deserve. These extremists are using the transgender community as political pawns. This year we have already seen state legislatures across the country introduce anti-LGBTQ legislation, and the Republican House majority has proposed similar extreme legislation that would target transgender and LGBTQ youth rather than addressing the actual issues facing students today. Certain Republicans have even gone as far as calling for the eradication of all trans people.

“While many Republicans continue to double down on their extremism, which directly conflicts with our nation’s values of freedom and bodily autonomy, Democrats across the country are standing up and fighting back. As Democrats, we believe there is no asterisk over the word freedom. We believe that health care is a right for all, including the right to access gender affirming care. We believe that our communities should be safe and welcoming to all, including members of the transgender and nonbinary community. We believe that trans rights are human rights and we will work tirelessly to ensure they are protected.”
