ICYMI: Texas Democrats Warn House Speaker: Flood Relief Must Come First

Yesterday, Texas House Democrats sent a letter to Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows demanding that lawmakers prioritize life-saving flood relief instead of weaponizing this widespread tragedy for political gain. While Republicans play political games to try to hold their House majority while Texas families reel from loss and tragedy, Democrats are committed to actually delivering the relief and support to Texans in this critical time of need.

The Honorable Dustin Burrows
Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives
P.O. Box 12910, Austin, Texas 78711

Speaker Burrows:

Texas House Democrats are ready to lead Texans through recovery after the July 4th Floods and to make life-saving investments in infrastructure that protect our communities from extreme weather. There is no greater purpose of the government at this time. Texas families are grieving their dead and Texas communities are hurting. We cannot bring back those lost, but we can stand with these families and shield our children and neighbors from future devastation—if we act with a singular purpose to protect life.

In this special session, flood relief must come first.

Yet instead of prioritizing flood recovery and real solutions, Governor Abbott has filled the special session agenda with partisan distractions: criminalizing abortion, banning bathroom access, and redrawing voting maps to lock in power for himself and his allies. Texans are still picking up the pieces after historic flooding, but Abbott is letting Trump take over Texas, using our state as a testing ground for extreme, divisive politics. He is more focused on playing political games than delivering the relief and support our communities desperately need.

Speaker Burrows, we call on you to join Texas House Democrats and stand in solidarity with Texans devastated by the July 4th floods by putting flood response first—before any other business. House Democrats refuse to engage in any other legislative work until after adequate flood relief and disaster mitigation legislation are passed and signed by the Governor. Texans need leaders who put people first—not those who bow to Trump and ignore the real crises facing our state.

Central Texas communities have shown tremendous resilience and courage in the aftermath of this tragedy. We are committed to matching their strength with action. Together, we can meet this moment of crisis, deliver real relief, and lead Texans toward healing and resilience.
