IN THE STATES: MAGA GOP Doubles Down on Default on America Plan, Extreme Agenda

This week, President Biden traveled to New York’s Hudson Valley where he highlighted House Republicans’ extreme Default on America plan. MAGA Republicans’ proposal could make drastic cuts to veterans’ care, education, health care, and border security — all while pushing additional tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. The GOP’s extreme and dangerous plan stands in stark contrast to President Biden’s plan to grow the economy and cut the deficit by nearly $3 trillion over 10 years.

Also this week, President Biden made renewed calls for action to GOP members of Congress following the mass shooting in Allen, Texas. Last summer, following shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, the president signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law, breaking a near 30-year logjam on gun safety at the federal level. Now, he’s urging further action.

In North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper launched a weeklong women’s health roundtable campaign across the state to spread awareness about the dangers of NC  Republicans’ abortion ban legislation and to prevent a GOP veto override.

And in New Hampshire, Donald Trump used a town hall with CNN to brag about being “honored” and “proud” to help overturn Roe v. Wade last year. Trump also called January 6 a “beautiful day,” said he was “inclined” to pardon insurrectionists, and endorsed MAGA Republicans’ plan to default on America.

Finally, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is boasting about his extreme six-week abortion ban, calling it “something that we were very proud to do” — while the abortion ban DeSantis signed last year is already creating a horrifying reality for women in Florida and across the South.

  • DeSantis on Hugh Hewitt this week: “Well, our protections for life are protections for unborn child when there’s a fetal heartbeat. And then there’s exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. And that was something that we were very proud to do.”
  • CNN: “Her doctors told her it was too late to terminate the pregnancy in Florida, which bans nearly all abortions after 15 weeks. The only options were to go out of state to get an abortion or to carry the baby to full term, and Dorbert and her husband didn’t have the money to travel.”
