Republicans Play Politics After January 6 Insurrection

Despite the five lives lost at the United States Capitol on January 6, and the stain that day left on our democracy, Republicans are doing everything they can to try to sweep it under the rug, all for the sake of protecting their electoral prospects.

Instead of voting for an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the event, Republicans are playing politics to protect Donald Trump, and themselves, from having to testify about their part in the insurrection.

CNN: “Even on a grave matter of national security, the GOP has concluded that the political price for standing with former President Donald Trump is preferable to the electoral cost of breaking with the disgraced former President.”

New York Times: “Leading congressional Republicans offer multiple justifications for why they oppose an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, but there is really one overriding reason: They fear it will hurt their party’s image and hinder their attempts to regain power in next year’s midterm elections.”

Washington Post – Opinion: “But let’s not lose sight of this fundamental truth. What Republicans must obscure is that they are covering up Jan. 6 not because they don’t want to re-litigate the past, but because they don’t want to litigate what the party currently is — and what it’s becoming.”
