Republicans Put Medicaid and Critical Programs for Working Families on the Chopping Block for Billionaire Handouts
April 5, 2025
In response to Senate Republicans repeatedly voting for more disastrous tax handouts for the ultra-wealthy while putting critical programs on the chopping block, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Last night, Senate Republicans showed us who they are and who they’re fighting for: their billionaire backers and big corporations – not working families, seniors, or kids. Donald Trump’s MAGA lackeys just put critical programs like Medicaid and Social Security on the chopping block to protect tax giveaways for the ultra-wealthy. As Trump steers the economy into a recession, Republicans are outright attacking millions of Americans’ hard-earned benefits and access to basics from health care to education — and the American people are taking notice.”
Last night, Senate Republicans repeatedly voted against critical programs and protections for working families, while doubling down on their promise to give billionaires another tax handout. Here’s what Republicans voted AGAINST:
- Stopping Medicaid and Medicare cuts
- Protecting Medicare and Medicaid funding from being used to pay for tax cuts for billionaires
- Blocking increases of out-of-pocket expenses for Medicare recipients
- Preventing rural hospitals closures due to Medicaid funding cuts
- Protecting SNAP funding to help put food on the table for hundreds of million Americans
- Reversing DOGE’s cuts to Social Security Administration and preventing more closures of Social Security field offices and phone service cuts
- Raising the minimum wage to to $17 an hour
- Ending tax handouts for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations
- Cutting taxes for middle class and small business while making the wealthy pay their fair share
- Stopping seniors from going hungry by protecting Meals on Wheels and other critical services
- Providing parents with child care through Head Start preschools
REMINDER: Donald Trump’s reckless agenda of mass firings and funding cuts has already gutted critical programs and agencies that Americans rely on every single day. So far Trump has:
- Froze millions of dollars already promised to farmers across the country
- Fired officials working on Medicare and Medicaid initiatives aimed at improving care
- Eliminated economic assistance programs for poor, rural Americans
- Shut down Head Start preschools across the country, leaving parents stranded without child care
- Gut funding to community health centers across the country, leaving millions of Americans without access to critical and life-saving treatment
- Blocked the VA from hiring “badly needed” doctors and nurses, putting our veterans hard-earned benefits at risk, while slashing critical metal health care services for veterans
- Closed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after it put $19.7 BILLION back in Americans’ pockets
- Let seniors go hungry, pausing funding for Meals on Wheels
- Ended the military’s sexual assault prevention training program
- Risk Americans’ safety in the skies, firing hundreds of Federal Aviation Administration employees
- Forced small businesses across the country to layoff employees
- Halted financial and medical assistance for Americans with disabilities
- Stopped the onboarding of thousands of firefighters
- Gutted the World Trade Center Health Program, a “lifeline” to 9/11 first responders, threatening critical health care for 130,000 WTC Health program members
- Fired the officials and scientists in charge of ensuring Americans food is safe
- Risked the future of US global leadership in science and technology as we face growing competition from China
- Left veterans on the street, ending funding for homeless veterans shelters
- Paused research on cures for childhood cancer
