The GOP Is The Party Of Trump And Extremists

| The recipe for today’s Republican Party is really quite simple: start with a base of total obedience to Donald Trump, add a healthy dose of doubling down on the Big Lie, and top it off with embracing far-right extremists. While President Biden and Democrats are fighting to build a better America where every family can thrive, it’s clear Republican lawmakers are only interested in doubling down on their extremism, no matter the cost. The Republican Party is led by the likes of Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, and Jim Jordan. Rep. Matt Gaetz: “We are going to take power after this next election. When we do, it’s not going to be the days of Paul Ryan, and Trey Gowdy, and no real oversight, and no real subpoenas. It’s going to be the days of Jim Jordan, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Dr. Gosar, and myself.” Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin: “Voters will have a choice in 2022 between Democrats tethered to the center and a party run by those who sought to overturn the election, who concoct insane conspiracy theories, who defend animations depicting the murder of other members of Congress, who are willing to default on the nation’s debt, who voted overwhelmingly against an infrastructure bill and who just might decide the former president and insurrection instigator Donald Trump should be speaker.” Associated Press: “The path to power for Republicans in Congress is now rooted in the capacity to generate outrage. The alarming language, and the fundraising haul it increasingly produces, is another example of how Donald Trump, the former president, has left his mark on politics, changing the way Republicans rise to influence and authority.” Vanity Fair: “Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Gaetz again claimed making Trump House Speaker would be his top priority in 2023, claiming that he’s spoken to the ex-president about the proposition.” House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy has proven to be a feckless leader who sold his soul to the most extreme elements of his caucus. The Hill’s Glenn Atlschuler: “To achieve his one and only goal — becoming Speaker of the House — McCarthy has become hostage to Donald Trump and what used to be regarded as ‘the exotic wing’ of the Republican Party.” USA Today: “Kevin McCarthy said if Republicans retake House, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar may get ‘better’ committee assignments” |
