CPAC 2022: Nothing But an Extreme GOP Cattle Call
August 4, 2022
Tonight, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and other MAGA Republicans will be gathering in Dallas, Texas to kick off the extreme Conservative Political Action Conference — where they will stand alongside far-right Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Let’s be clear: CPAC 2022 is nothing but an extreme GOP cattle call. Even former CPAC Chair Al Cardenas said it was “shameful” that Orbán was invited.
Al Cardenas: “[It’s] shameful that CPAC has invited this authoritarian, pro-Putin despot to come to America — in [the] midst of war [with] our ally Ukraine — and speak. They should know better.”
CPAC will also roll out the red carpet for a host of election denialists like MAGA extremist Kari Lake — the GOP nominee for Arizona governor — and “MyPillow Guy” Mike Lindell, who spent tens of millions of dollars to back Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election.
The Guardian: “MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell, a fervent Donald Trump ally, says he has poured $35-40 [million] into a wide crusade — a wave of lawsuits to get rid of voting machines that he faults for Trump’s defeat, a new movie about voting fraud, and a hefty legal stable — to promote charges that the 2020 election was riddled with fraud, despite a flood of contrary evidence.”
As if that weren’t bad enough, CPAC will spotlight Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida, a loyal MAGA foot soldier who made headlines last week for spouting off misogynistic comments against abortion rights activists.
Matt Gaetz: “Why is it that the women with the least likelihood of getting pregnant are the ones most worried about having abortions? Nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb.”
CPAC 2022 is the perfect representation of what the Republican Party is today — extreme, out of touch, and totally beholden to Trump’s “Big Lie.”
