DNC Statement Ahead of Iowa Faith and Freedom Cattle Call
April 22, 2023
Ahead of 2024 MAGA Republicans’ cattle call at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition, DNC spokesperson Rhyan Lake released the following statement:
“This cattle call is just the latest gathering of MAGA Republicans who’ve spent their entire careers pushing for an extreme agenda — from banning abortion to gutting Social Security to wanting to rip away affordable health care access from millions of Americans. Each and every 2024 Republican has doubled down on their exceedingly extreme positions that are out of step with hard working Americans and can count on being held accountable by voters.”
2024 Republicans are hellbent on ripping away a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, and they’ve already shown us how far they’ll go to ban abortion.
Donald Trump: “Nobody has ever done more for right to life than Donald Trump. I put three Supreme Court justices, who all voted, and they got something that they’ve been fighting for for 64 years, or many, many years.”
Tim Scott: “The people have decided that their elected leaders have the opportunity to do so, so I say absolutely … if I were president of the United States, I would literally sign the most conservative pro-life legislation that they can get through Congress.”
Wolf Blitzer: “Would you support a six week ban nationwide?”
Mike Pence: “Well, of course. Look — I’m pro-life. I don’t apologize for it. I believe that we’ve got to do everything in our power to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law. And I’d support federal legislation in that regard if I was in the Congress or had any other job here in town.”
The Independent: “Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson defended his state’s controversial law that makes all abortions illegal in all cases except to save the life of the patient in a medical emergency on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning.”
MAGA Republicans are also campaigning on putting Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block — proposing to rip away essential programs working families and seniors rely on.
Washington Post: “His avowed stance, however, is at odds with Trump’s own record as president: Each of his White House budget proposals included cuts to Social Security and Medicare programs.”
Washington Post: “Other potential entrants in the Republican primary, such as former secretary of state Mike Pompeo, Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.) and South Dakota Gov. Kristi L. Noem, also voted for Ryan’s [proposal to cut and privatize Medicare] when they were in Congress.”
Semafor: “Mike Pence isn’t running from his old fiscal conservatism. Instead, he’s seemingly leaning into it by talking about privatizing Social Security, an idea the party largely abandoned after a politically damaging push in 2005.
“‘I think the day could come where we can replace the New Deal with a Better Deal,’ he said during an interview in February. ‘Literally give younger Americans the ability to take a portion of their Social Security withholdings and put that into a private savings account that the government would oversee.’”
And these 2024 Republicans have long and consistent records of opposing the Affordable Care Act, which has helped some of the most vulnerable Americans get quality, affordable health care.
New York Times: “Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Strike Down Affordable Care Act”
Washington Post: “VP Pence: ‘America’s Obamacare nightmare is about to end’”
WIS10: “South Carolina Senator Tim Scott is one Republican who voted on a measure that begins the process of repealing the Affordable Care Act.”
