DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Native Caucus Chair Clara Pratte released the following joint statement on the passing of Head Councilman Joe Garcia of Ohkay Owingeh:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of renowned Tribal leader and elder Joe Garcia. As the head councilman of the Ohkay Owingeh, former president of the National Congress of American Indians, and former DNC committee member, Head Councilman Garcia devoted his life to strengthening nation to nation relationships across Indian Country. 

“Our country is a better place because of his lifetime of advocacy and solidarity with all Tribal nations. We are confident that Head Councilman Garcia’s legacy of service will live on in the countless lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with Head Councilman Garcia, his family and friends, as well as all of Indian Country as we mourn his passing.”
