Mike Pence to Bring His Extreme MAGA Agenda to the CNN Stage
June 8, 2023
Ahead of Mike Pence’s CNN town hall tonight, here’s your reminder that he’s spent years relentlessly pushing a MAGA agenda — including banning abortion nationwide, cutting Medicare and ending Social Security as we know it, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with election deniers, and supporting the tax breaks that rigged the economy for the ultra-rich.
Pence makes no apologies for his support for banning abortion nationwide before many women even know they’re pregnant.
Wolf Blitzer: “Would you support a six-week ban nationwide?”
Pence: “Well, of course. Look — I’m pro-life. I don’t apologize for it. I believe that we’ve got to do everything in our power to restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law. And I’d support federal legislation in that regard if I was in the Congress or had any other job here in town.”
Even before he made his entrance into the 2024 field official, Pence has spent decades campaigning on his plans to cut Medicare and end Social Security as we know it.
Semafor: “Mike Pence isn’t running from his old fiscal conservatism. Instead, he’s seemingly leaning into it by talking about privatizing Social Security, an idea the party largely abandoned after a politically damaging push in 2005.
“‘I think the day could come where we can replace the New Deal with a Better Deal,’ he said during an interview in February. ‘Literally give younger Americans the ability to take a portion of their Social Security withholdings and put that into a private savings account that the government would oversee.’”
New York Times: “Mr. Pence says Social Security and Medicare must be trimmed back as part of any serious plan to deal with the national debt.”
Yahoo News: “Pence calls for Social Security reform, private savings accounts”
DON’T FORGET: Pence hit the campaign trail last fall to stump for candidates who helped spread baseless conspiracy theories about the results of the 2020 election.
Washington Post: “Pence has said Trump was ‘wrong’ to pressure him to reject the electoral college votes … But as Pence has begun laying the groundwork to run in 2024, he isn’t seeking to make opposing Trump core to his political brand. Last week, Pence appeared in Phoenix to endorse Senate candidate Blake Masters of Arizona … Pence also led a fundraiser for Burt Jones, the Republican nominee for Georgia’s lieutenant governor who was part of the effort … to submit phony electors claiming Trump won the state in 2020.”
Pence also called to make the same tax breaks that rigged the economy for the ultra-wealthy permanent.
Wall Street Journal: “Mr. Pence said he would also call for the ‘Trump-Pence tax cuts’ to be permanent and for the rejection of ‘bailouts as an economic policy’ because they eviscerate the discipline of a free-market system.”
Washington Post: “The combination of Trump’s 2017 tax cut and the lack of any serious spending restraint helped both the deficit and the debt soar.”
