Chris Christie Once Endorsed a National Abortion Ban

Chris Christie is an anti-abortion extremist with a record to prove it: He endorsed a national abortion ban, eliminated grants for women’s health care clinics as governor of New Jersey, and worked with anti-choice extremist organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Ahead of his last failed campaign for president, Chris Christie backed a national abortion ban, and he hasn’t ruled one out after the Dobbs decision.

Washington Examiner: “Christie previously supported a 20-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest, or to save a mother’s life before his first presidential run in 2016. … When Cooper pressed Christie about whether he would sign a federal abortion ban that did have consensus, Christie danced around the topic. ‘I don’t think we should be worried about that now,’ Christie responded.”

Christie on federal abortion restrictions: “And so first, I hope that what happens over the course of the next 16 months or so is that each of the states and their people weigh in on this issue of abortion, whether it’s through referenda or whether it’s through actions by the legislature and the governor. After that, if there were a consensus, an obvious national consensus that was adopted by the Congress, I would consider signing such a piece of legislation.”

After the fall of Roe, Christie worked with an anti-choice group on efforts to restrict access to abortion.

Axios: “The president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America told Axios on Friday that in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, her group will work to restrict abortion ‘in every state and in every legislature, including the Congress.’ … Dannenfelser said she’s working with governors and state legislatures in dozens of states. As we spoke, she said she was getting a call from former Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has been working with her to coordinate efforts.”

In New Jersey, Christie slashed funding for women’s health services and sought to restrict reproductive rights.

NJ.com: “Nearly eight years after Republican Gov. Chris Christie eliminated $7.5 million in state grants to support family planning and women’s health clinics, Democratic state lawmakers took the first step Monday to reinstate the money.”

Bloomberg: “When he first ran for governor in 2009 against incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine, he said officials needed to ‘work to reduce abortions in New Jersey through laws such as parental notification, a 24-hour waiting period and a ban on partial-birth abortion.’”

Bloomberg: “Chris Christie, who last week prodded Republicans to drop anti-abortion rhetoric to appeal to more voters, has steadily weakened access to the procedure in New Jersey. Even with a Democratic-controlled legislature committed to reproductive rights, the second-term governor’s annual funding cuts for women’s health services have prompted at least six clinics to close since 2010, according to lawmakers.”
