MAGA Malarkey: The Extremism You Missed From Republicans This Week

MAGA Republicans stooped to new lows this week with their extremism, hypocrisy, chaos, and — as President Biden would call it — malarkey. In case you missed it: Donald Trump hurled insults at Israel while praising terrorists, Trump was called out by America’s top military leaders for his reckless foreign policy agenda, and RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel was quick to politicize the crisis in Israel.

Also this week, Tommy Tuberville doubled down on his blockade of military nominations and promotions, Tim Scott tried to take credit for legislation he voted against on lowering prescription drug costs, and Trump bragged that his MAGA agenda represents nearly the entire Republican Party.

Donald Trump shamefully criticized Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and praised Hezbollah as “very smart” during a speech in Florida on Wednesday, less than a week after terrorists attacked Israel.

Times of Israel: “Trump: Hezbollah ‘very smart,’ Defense Minister Gallant is a ‘jerk’”

Bloomberg: “The former president also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for not joining him in a 2020 drone strike in Iraq that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and called Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite militant group that has been designated as a terrorist organization by the US, ‘very smart’… Trump’s remarks came after President Joe Biden has mounted a vigorous defense of Israel and vowed to stand by the Jewish community against a rising tide of antisemitism.”

Politico: “He criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called Hezbollah ‘very smart.’ Both less than a week after the attack on Israel. It was, as billed, a speech about the atrocities abroad. In the most Trumpian way possible.”

Washington Post: “Trump’s comments reflected his long-established pattern of slighting U.S. allies while complimenting adversaries such as Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.”

John Kelly and Mark Milley are the latest in a long line of top military leaders to call out Donald Trump’s unhinged leadership on the world stage. Trump’s failed foreign policy agenda comes into full focus this week as he continues to show how dangerous he is when it comes to protecting our allies and projecting leadership in a time of global crisis.

CNN: “John Kelly, the longest-serving White House chief of staff for Donald Trump, offered his harshest criticism yet of the former president in an exclusive statement to CNN.

“Kelly set the record straight with on-the-record confirmation of a number of damning stories about statements Trump made behind closed doors attacking US service members and veterans, listing a number of objectionable comments Kelly witnessed Trump make firsthand.”

The Atlantic: “James Mattis Denounces President Trump, Describes Him As A Threat To The Constitution”

Mattis: “Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us… We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.”

CNN: “‘A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about. A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason – in expectation that someone will take action. A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law. ‘There is nothing more that can be said,’ Kelly concluded. ‘God help us.’”

The Hill: “A retired four-star Army general said that he believes that President Trump is a ‘serious threat to US national security.’ Retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey tweeted Friday that he reached the conclusion about Trump because the president ‘is refusing to protect vital US interests from active Russian attacks.’ ‘It is apparent that he is for some unknown reason under the sway of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin,’ he added.”

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel shamelessly boasted that the deadly attack in Israel is a “great opportunity” for 2024 Republicans.

Ronna McDaniel: “I think this is a great opportunity for our candidates to contrast where Republicans have stood with Israel ― time and time again ― and Joe Biden has been weak.”

In the wake of the deadly attack in Israel, Tommy Tuberville is doubling down on undermining our military by continuing his monthslong blockade of hundreds of nominations and promotions – and 2024 Republicans are cheering his political stunt on.

Politico: “Sen. Tommy Tuberville is not relenting from his monthslong blockade of military nominations over the Biden administration’s abortion policy — even in the face of one of America’s closest allies going to war.

“After Hamas attacked Israel, Senate Democrats said it was past time for several top-level military nominees to be approved. But a Tuberville spokesperson confirmed Sunday that the senator’s position remains: Democrats must move top nominees individually until the Pentagon revokes its policy of covering travel costs for troops seeking an abortion across state lines.”

AL.com: “Former President Donald Trump praised Tuberville over the votes on Truth Social: ‘BIG WIN FOR TOMMY. Unlike McConnell and his group of automatic Democrat YES VOTES, Tommy T is willing to take on the Radical Left Fascists & Thugs that are destroying our Country. What a difference!’”

Politico: “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis backed Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s months-long blockade on military nominations on Thursday, saying that the Pentagon’s abortion policy would “go out the window” if he wins the presidency. … Military leaders and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have blasted Tuberville, saying that the hold harms national security and military readiness.”

HuffPost: “GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley took aim at the Defense Department for beginning a policy at the center of Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Ala.) hold on 300-plus military promotions in the Senate.”

Pence: “I commend Sen. Tuberville, and rather than asking him to stand down, I’d ask the Pentagon to stand down.”

CBS News: “GOP Sen. Tuberville’s hold on nominations could cause armed forces to ‘lose talent,’ nominee for top military officer says”

Washington Post: “Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said a Republican senator’s delay of the quick approval of nearly 200 military promotions poses a ‘clear risk’ to the nation’s military readiness and directly affects the lives of service members’ families.”

Tim Scott tried to take credit for capping the price of prescription drugs, even though he voted AGAINST doing that and has vowed to eliminate the Inflation Reduction Act.

Scott: “One of the things we did for our seniors in the last Congress, not this Congress, last Congress, is we were able to cap out-of-pocket expenses, and that’s a really good thing.”

Scott: “I would simply eliminate the IRA, the Inflation Reduction Act, which of course is a lie from the pit of hell. I would start the process of gutting that legislation.”

Donald Trump said that his extreme MAGA agenda represents almost 100% of the Republican Party.

Donald Trump: “Look, MAGA – most of the Republican – well they say ‘MAGA represents approximately 55%’ – no, it represents probably close to 100% of the Republican Party.”
