In response to the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which has led to dangerous abortion bans across the country, DNC National Press Secretary Emilia Rowland released the following statement:  

“It’s been two years since Donald Trump succeeded in his plan to rip away reproductive freedoms protected by Roe v. Wade, and MAGA Republicans in Congress and in the states have followed Trump’s lead in unleashing an all-out assault on women’s reproductive freedoms with devastating consequences to Americans’ lives, health, and futures. Now, because of Trump, anti-choice extremists from state Houses to the halls of Congress are plotting to take their extremism even further — pushing a nationwide abortion ban, threatening access to IVF, and restricting contraception. Let’s be clear: the fate of women’s reproductive freedom is on the ballot this November, and the American people will reject Trump and MAGA extremists’ anti-freedom agenda.” 

REMINDER: Donald Trump brags about getting Roe v. Wade overturned and paving the way for extreme bans across the country, saying he’s “proud to have done it” and claiming credit for enabling state bans. His campaign has even run paid ads claiming credit for overturning Roe. 

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

Trump and his MAGA minions have made it clear that they are willing to strip away reproductive freedoms and ban abortion nationwide.

Associated Press: “Trump suggests he’d support a national ban on abortions around 15 weeks of pregnancy”

Trump on if he would sign a six-week national abortion ban: “I’m looking at all [options].”

Project 2025: “FDA should … Reverse its approval of chemical abortion drugs because the politicized approval process was illegal from the start. … Now that the Supreme Court has acknowledged that the Constitution contains no right to an abortion, the FDA is ethically and legally obliged to revisit and withdraw its initial approval, which was premised on pregnancy being an ‘illness’ and abortion being ‘therapeutically’ effective at treating this ‘illness.’ The FDA is statutorily charged with guaranteeing the safety and efficacy of drugs and therefore should withdraw this drug that is proven to be dangerous to women and by definition fatally unsafe for unborn children.”

The Atlantic: “Their next goal will be ending legal abortion in America once and for all. … Their ultimate aim in reviving the Comstock Act is to use it to shut down every abortion facility ‘in all 50 states.’”

Trump’s top ally in the House, MAGA Mike Johnson, supports banning abortion with NO exceptions.

Punchbowl News: “Johnson doesn’t back exceptions for abortion:

“‘I’ve never supported exemptions. It’s a matter of conscience to me. But [Trump] was very clear. He qualified those statements, as well. And he said everybody has to express your own conscience … It’s a difficult issue in a lot of districts and everybody needs to go and address it … in an appropriate way. And so far, everybody is.’”

Trump’s allies in the Republican Study Committee have repeatedly attacked access to reproductive health care, including co-sponsoring the Life at Conception Act, which would ban abortion nationwide and could rip away IVF access from families nationwide.

Business Insider: “Most House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are ‘unborn children.’

“This Congress, 125 House Republicans — including Speaker Mike Johnson — have cosponsored the ‘Life at Conception Act,’ which states that the term ‘human being’ includes ‘all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.’

“The bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.”

Joseph Zeballos-Roig, Semafor: “The House GOP Study Committee (largest House GOP bloc) released a budget endorsing the Life at Conception Act, which would provide 14th amendment legal protections at every stage of life. Amounts to near-total ban on abortions with no IVF exceptions”

Matthew Yglesias, Bloomberg: “In case anyone is still covering the IVF question, today’s new Republican Study Committee budget specifically endorses the idea that embryos have the full legal rights of persons under the 14th Amendment.”

Yglesias: “They’re also backing a bill to ban mifepristone (again, something you could achieve through judicial or executive branch action as well)”

Johnson rallied against access to medication abortion and access to telemedicine that provides women with necessary reproductive health care.

Johnson: “One of the things we’re trying to be on the lookout for is the rise, the use of chemical abortions because there’s this move towards telemedicine and off-site medical treatment and that kind of thing. So there will be a push and, you know, the other side will say, ‘This is very compassionate, what about the evolving nature of medicine, we need to be able to treat people remotely, and so we’ll just mail them a chemical that will induce the abortion’ — a pill or syringe or whatever it is. 

“We have to be very vigilant about that, the states are going to have to ramp up regulation of off-site medical treatment — and those are good innovations because it helps a lot of people when you’re talking about true medical help. But in the abortion industry, Planned Parenthood and the abortion cartels are going to try their best to maximize profits with that of course, because they always put profit over people. And we’ve got to be watching for that, that’s going to be one of these new emerging areas, I think, as telemedicine takes off and becomes more common and more prevalent. So particularly out in the rural areas, you know, it’s going to be a big thing to watch. 

“So we’ll have some legislation to try and address that as well, but again, I keep coming back to the same issue that, you know, it really comes down to the election if … the pro-abortion Democrats are allowed to maintain control of the House, we’re kind of stuck on go because we can’t move this important legislation. And they’re never going to allow it in any of the larger bills. So we got to be really active and engaged in this cycle.”

REMINDER: Senate Republicans signed onto a statement “supporting” access to IVF, only to block a bill protecting it the next day. 

Anthony Adranga, Politico: “New: All 49 Senate Republicans sign onto statement supporting access to IVF: 

“‘We strongly support continued nationwide access to IVF, which has allowed millions of aspiring parents to start and grow their families.’”

The Hill: “Legislation to establish a national right to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) was blocked by Senate Republicans on Thursday, amid a push by Democrats to put the GOP on defense over reproductive rights ahead of the November elections… 

“The Right to IVF Act, sponsored by Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), is a package of four bills that would both establish a nationwide right to IVF and other assisted reproductive technology, as well as lower the costs of IVF treatment to make it more accessible.  

“The vote Thursday is the latest in a series set up by Senate Democratic leadership about codifying reproductive rights.”
