MAGA Malarkey: The Extremism You Missed From Republicans This Week
August 23, 2024
MAGA Republicans stooped to new lows this week with their extremism, hypocrisy, chaos, and — as President Biden would call it — malarkey. In case you missed it: Donald Trump’s bizarre tirade about the Democratic National Convention got cut off by Fox News; Trump said he has “no regrets” about overturning Roe v. Wade; Trump went on a five-minute rant when asked about his ties to Project 2025; Trump praised Project 2025 author and family separation policy architect Tom Homan as an “incredible, incredible patriot”; JD Vance lied about the border bill that he helped Trump kill; and new reporting revealed that Vance defended a white nationalist in a speech.
Donald Trump knows the Democratic National Convention was a smashing success that highlighted the Harris-Walz ticket’s vision for the future – so he went on a tirade so unhinged that he got cut off by Fox News.
New York Times: “Dialing In to Fox News, Trump Offers a Rambling Rebuttal to Harris’s Speech”
MSNBC: “Trump suffers unintentionally funny meltdown on DNC’s final night”
Jennifer Bendery, HuffPost: “Trump gets shuffled off-air, loses control of phone in post-DNC Fox News meltdown”
Trump said he has “no regrets” about overturning Roe v. Wade and paving the way for cruel abortion bans across the country.
The Hill: “Trump says he has ‘no regrets’ about Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade”
“‘People are very happy about it,’ Trump said in an interview with CBS News. ‘No regrets, no. I wouldn’t have regrets. I did something most people felt was undoable.’
“Anti-abortion activists, working with former Trump administration officials, have been laying the groundwork for the next Republican administration to apply the Comstock Act to prevent the mailing of any abortion drugs and materials, effectively banning all abortions without needing Congress to act.”
When confronted about his deep ties to Project 2025, Trump went on a “bonkers” rant.
The New Republic: “Trump Goes on Bonkers Five-Minute Rant Over a Simple Question”
“Donald Trump went on an absurdly long and winding tirade Thursday when asked to respond to Tim Walz’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.
“During a morning appearance on Fox & Friends, Trump was asked to respond to the Democratic vice presidential nominee’s speech linking Trump to Project 2025, which has been proven time and time again.”
“When asked to respond to Walz, Trump took off on a winding rant that touched on a little bit of everything.”
Trump praised Tom Homan, Project 2025 author and architect of his cruel family separation policy, as an “incredible, incredible patriot.”
Trump: “The best people. I was listening to people like Tom Homan, who is, you know, just an incredible, incredible patriot. Tough, smart, gets it, good man, but he’s tough. I’ve been listening to all these people; they’ve been friends of mine for a long time. They know it better than anybody.”
CNN: “Project 2025’s proposals for reforming the country’s immigration laws appear heavily influenced by those who helped execute Trump’s early enforcement measures. Former acting US Customs and Border Protection chief Mark Morgan and former Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Tom Homan – the faces of Trump’s polarizing policies – contributed to the project, as did Kathy Nuebel Kovarik, one of the policy advisers pushing to end certain immigrant protections behind the scenes.”
JD Vance lied about the toughest, fairest bipartisan border bill in decades – the one that he helped Trump kill.
Vance: “Yeah, ma’am, I appreciate that question, and for those of you couldn’t heard it: how do we respond to Democrats who say that they tried to pass a border security bill? My response, ma’am, is I was there in the Senate when they tried to pass that border security bill, and it had nothing to do with border security.”
CNN: “The border compromise would represent a dramatic change of immigration law on lines many Republicans have long supported.”

New reporting revealed that Vance defended a white nationalist in a speech celebrating an extremists’ book.
The Guardian: “Revealed: JD Vance promoted far-right views in speech about extremists’ book”
“In a December 2023 speech, JD Vance defended a notorious white nationalist convicted over 2016 election disinformation, canvassed the possibility of breaking up tech companies, attacked diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts and talked about a social media ‘censorship regime’ that ‘came from the deep state on some level.’
“The senator’s speech was given at the launch of a ‘counterrevolutionary’ book – praised by the now Republican vice-presidential candidate as ‘great’ – which was edited and mostly written by employees of the far-right Claremont Institute.
“In the book, Up from Conservatism, the authors advocate for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act, for politicians to conduct ‘deep investigations into what the gay lifestyle actually does to people,’ that college and childcare be defunded and that rightwing governments ‘promote male-dominated industries’ in order to discourage female participation in the workplace.”
