Facing an inevitable primary loss in Texas, John Cornyn begs Kash Patel to send federal agents after state legislators

Texas Democrats won’t be intimidated

Today, facing a certain reelection loss and desperate for attention, Texas Senator John Cornyn announced that Trump flunky Kash Patel had agreed to deploy the FBI to “find” Texas Democrats who are fighting for our democracy and have been doing public events all week. Although the FBI may informally assist local law enforcement to locate fugitives, it is not a secret where Texas Democrats are. Any FBI involvement would be a waste of federal resources.

A reminder: The federal crime of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution only applies to crossing state lines to avoid prosecution or incarceration for a felony. The FBI can make its own arrests only for federal crimes. The Texas battle for democracy involves only civil warrants issued by a state legislature. And it is absurd to accuse Texas Democrats of public corruption for working with allies to stand up for their constituents. John Cornyn is attempting to treat the FBI as Trump’s lackeys.

DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

“Faced with an inevitable election loss, John Cornyn is desperately swinging for the fences, asking Kash Patel to take a break from covering up for Donald Trump to instead pull this political stunt. They both know damn well that legally, there’s nothing they can do. Texas Democrats aren’t hiding — they are out there in public fighting for our democracy, for the Constitution, and for the people of Texas. The DNC stands with them as they fight threats to their safety and security. We stand ready to help them defend democracy in Texas and across the country. As Texas Democratic House Leader Rep. Gene Wu has said, if Trump, Corynyn, and Patel want a battle, they can ‘come and take it.’”
