NEW: Unemployment Surges Under Donald Trump’s Watch
November 20, 2025

Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ September jobs report revealed that the unemployment rate edged up to a staggering 4.4%, the highest since October 2021. The manufacturing sector has taken yet another hit, shedding 6,000 jobs last month, and bringing the total manufacturing losses to 49,000 since Trump took office — despite his promises of a “manufacturing renaissance.” Trump’s unhinged trade war is to blame for his worsening job market, leaving everyday Americans behind as they grapple with climbing inflation and soaring costs.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs have been a disaster for the job market — and everyday Americans are the ones paying the price. Trump promised job creation, but now we’re seeing the worst unemployment rate in years. He promised a ‘manufacturing renaissance,’ but the manufacturing sector has been hollowed out. He vowed to lower costs on ‘Day One,’ but prices are skyrocketing. Trump’s broken promises have left everyday Americans behind, while billionaires get ahead. Working families are already stretching their paychecks to keep up with soaring inflation — they shouldn’t have to worry about losing their jobs.”
To make matters worse, mass layoffs are surging under Trump’s watch. Just this morning, Verizon began laying off 13,000 workers — the largest cut in the company’s history. Recently, GM announced more than 1,700 job cuts, Amazon cut 14,000 workers with more to come, and Target laid off 1,800 workers. In October alone, more than 150,000 jobs were cut nationwide, bringing the total number of layoffs in 2025 to over 1.1 million.
