BREAKING: House Democrats Lead Vote to Overturn Trump’s Erratic Trade War with Canada
February 11, 2026

Today, led by House Democrats, the House successfully passed a resolution to overturn Donald Trump’s erratic tariffs on Canada. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of House Republicans voted to defend the tariffs that have driven up costs for working families on everything from housing to groceries to utilities.
In 2025, American households paid an estimated $2,120 more due to Trump’s inflation, including $123 more on electricity costs and $150 more on groceries.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s unhinged trade war has been a disaster for working families. While Trump makes back-door deals with billionaires and big corporations, everyday Americans are left footing the bill for his reckless tariffs. Republicans have rolled over and let it happen, and now working families are struggling to afford everyday necessities like groceries, clothes, rent, and utilities, and small businesses are barely staying afloat. Instead of changing course, Trump is doubling down, so Democrats took action. Democrats will keep fighting to lower costs to make life more affordable for working families.”
American consumers and importers — not foreign exporters — are bearing 96% of the costs of Trump’s tariffs. It’s no wonder 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s tariffs, including nearly 1-in-3 Republicans.
Despite being in the minority, House Democrats have successfully forced votes on numerous issues that are top of mind for everyday Americans, like funding for Affordable Care Act subsidies and the release of the Epstein files.
