NEW: Trump Pushes Inflation Up, GDP Down
February 20, 2026

Everyday Americans can’t pay their bills, and good-paying jobs are harder and harder to come by, but Donald Trump keeps pushing the economy into a downward spiral. Just this morning, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump’s tariffs are illegal, ending — for now — his reckless trade war that has tanked the job market, spiked costs, and taxed Americans approximately $175 billion.
New economic data released today demonstrates just how deeply the American people are hurting: PCE inflation rose to its highest level since March 2024, and fourth quarter GDP came in dramatically under expectations, reflecting a sharp deceleration driven by Trump’s reckless economic policies that have left working families struggling to make ends meet. Data also revealed that Americans’ spending is slowing down, driven by persistent high prices and economic uncertainty.
Yesterday, Trump declared that “the tariff is the greatest thing that’s happened to this country,” despite Americans’ deep disapproval of his economic policy that has resulted in massive job losses and higher prices. American households paid an estimated $2,120 more in 2025 because of Trump’s inflation, and companies are planning to raise costs again.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Trump lies, but the numbers don’t: The latest data reveals that Americans are struggling to afford basic necessities. As Wall Street executives grow richer by the day, working families, small business owners, and farmers are tightening their budgets and scrambling to make ends meet. Instead of looking out for everyday Americans, Trump is selling them out to hand out massive tax cuts to billionaires.”
