Statement from DNC Chair Ken Martin on Donald Trump’s Address to the Nation

Tonight, Donald Trump addressed the nation, spreading debunked lies about the 2020 election he lost as he and Republicans attempt to undermine free and fair elections and “guarantee the midterms.”

Trump took to the podium tonight to present years-old information that provided no evidence China interfered directly with the election. U.S. intelligence concluded years ago with “high confidence” that China did not attempt any direct interference with the U.S. election process in 2020.

In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“Tonight, Americans watched Donald Trump air old grievances and desperately try to justify his assault on free and fair elections with lies about the 2020 election he lost. Trump and Republicans continue to lay the groundwork for interfering with the midterm elections in an attempt to cling to power. There’s one simple reason for this brazen power grab: Republicans know they’re going to lose the midterms. Americans are outraged over Trump and Republicans’ agenda of chaos, corruption, and skyrocketing costs and are going to reject it at the ballot box in November. Make no mistake: while Trump pushes our democracy to its limits in a desperate attempt to hold on to power, Democrats are fighting back to win elections, protect voting rights, and hold Trump and Republicans accountable.”

Democrats are taking this fight to the courts, and are winning. The DNC sued DOJ, DHS, and DOD for failing to comply with a FOIA request for any plans to deploy troops or armed agents to polling places, and the DNC has kept up the pressure, leading to a federal court order this week requiring the agencies to speed up the processing of documents for release. In another case, Watson v. RNC, the DNC filed an amicus brief defending voters’ rights to securely cast their ballots nationwide, especially for working families, seniors, Americans with disabilities, and members of the military who rely on mail-in voting to make their voices heard. In RNC v. Benson, the DNC filed an amicus curiae brief to fight against the RNC attempting to disenfranchise U.S. citizens abroad, most notably military families.

The DNC also continues to invest in year-round organizing to increase voter participation and is providing historic monthly investments to state parties to register voters, boost organizing efforts, and leverage new technology and data ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Democrats are also fighting back against Republican voter suppression and intimidation efforts. The DNC’s voter protection team continues to advocate for voter access by building and maintaining critical relationships with election administrators across the country. These long-term efforts build a foundation of trust that allows the DNC and in-state voter protection programs to gather information, identify problems, and advocate for solutions. These relationships promote free and fair elections and give the DNC a voice in the electoral process across a wide range of jurisdictions. The DNC, together with state parties, develops voter education, registration, and ballot access programs so voters can register and cast their ballots properly, especially in jurisdictions where Republican lawmakers are making it harder to vote. The DNC operates a year-round national voter assistance hotline, tracks legislative threats across the country, offers know your rights training, and manages IWillVote, a unified multilingual voter education platform with polling location lookup, election dates, registration requirements and deadlines, and directs voters to online locations where they can register to vote. To ensure the midterm elections are free and fair, the DNC, in partnership with state parties and coordinated campaigns, is recruiting, training, and deploying thousands of poll observers during early voting and on Election Day.
