On the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act becoming law, DNC Chair Ken Martin and DNC Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation Reyna Walters-Morgan released the following statement:
“This anniversary of the Voting Rights Act comes at a dark moment for our democracy. In April, the Supreme Court functionally gutted the crown jewel of the civil rights movement with its disastrous decision in Louisiana v. Callais. Since then, Donald Trump and Republicans have been waging a relentless campaign to dilute the political power of Black and Brown Americans.
“Whether by purging voter rolls, closing polling locations, or enacting policies designed to disenfranchise communities of color, it is clear that Republicans will stop at nothing to maintain their power. Democrats will continue to uphold our sacred duty to protect voting rights by organizing, mobilizing, and turning out voters to hold Trump and Republicans accountable for their assault on our rights.”
