For every dollar Trump’s bill cut from healthcare and food assistance, it delivered a dollar in tax breaks to the top 1%
Donald Trump and Republicans’ so-called “One, Big Beautiful Bill” has been a disaster for working families. Their “signature achievement” ripped healthcare away from millions of Americans, gutted food assistance, and gave permanent tax handouts to billionaires and big corporations.
Trump’s bill cut $1 TRILLION from Medicaid — the single largest cut to healthcare in history — putting 900 health facilities at risk of closure, including more than 300 rural hospitals. 10 million Americans are expected to lose healthcare as a result of Trump’s bill — on top of the five million people who have already dropped health coverage after Trump and Republicans refused to extend the popular enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits. Meanwhile, approximately 5 million people have already lost food assistance, and more than 22 million total households were expected to lose some or all of their SNAP benefits.
Trump and Republicans have desperately tried to rebrand their bill as a “working families tax cut,” but the truth is clear: Trump’s billionaire-first bill was the largest wealth transfer from low-income Americans to the top 1% in history. Their Big Ugly Bill gave more in tax breaks to the top 1% than the bottom 80% COMBINED — receiving a total tax cut of roughly $14 billion more than the latter group. The poorest households are expected to end up with $1,200 less per year, while the wealthiest households will gain nearly $14,000 per year.
Trump’s budget is the most unpopular bill in at least 30 years — and it’s no wonder that an overwhelming majority of Americans opposed it. By a more than two-to-one margin, voters believed Trump’s budget would leave their families worse off rather than better off, and nearly two-thirds say it would primarily benefit the wealthy while hurting working families.
