According to new data released today, consumer sentiment fell to its lowest level in four months, down 15% from January 2026, and the second-worst reading on record dating back to the 1950s. Even Republican sentiment is now 20% lower than in January 2026.
Under Donald Trump and JD Vance, Americans have already spent an additional $4,200 on essentials, from gas to groceries. Despite Trump’s promise of $2 gas, the national average price of gas is $4.49 per gallon, and diesel has reached an all-time high, continuing to hover above $6.50 per gallon. Yet, as working families struggle to get by with no breathing room, a new report revealed that Trump’s countless vanity projects are expected to cost more than $1.8 billion, including taxpayer dollars.
While Trump chooses to turn a blind eye to the pain everyday Americans are feeling, it’s no wonder his approval ratings have dropped to an all-time low. Only 27% of Americans approve of Trump on the economy, and two-thirds of Americans say Trump has worsened economic conditions.
In response, DNC Deputy Communications Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s reckless economic agenda continues to price Americans out of groceries, healthcare, and their own homes. It’s no surprise that consumer sentiment has dropped to historic lows as Trump refuses to provide any relief for working families. Trump is more focused on escalating a costly trade war and an unpopular war of choice with Iran while everyday Americans are breaking the bank to pay for essentials. The American people have been clear — their priorities should never be shelved, and come November, voters will remember who turned their backs on them.”
