Trump Enables Russia’s Success, Undermines U.S. National Security

Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey was “another huge point on the scoreboard for Putin.” In addition to creating instability, Trump has actively helped to enable Russia’s success by spreading lies and trying to bury the FBI’s investigation. Trump is once again playing into the hands of Vladimir Putin, which undermines our national security and makes the world less safe.

The instability, although driven by Trump, has in some ways extended and amplified the effect Russia sought to achieve with its unprecedented campaign to undermine the 2016 presidential race. In a declassified report released this year, U.S. spy agencies described destabilization as one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objectives.

Trump’s move on Tuesday to terminate FBI Director James Comey puts another huge point on the scoreboard for Putin — especially given the FBI’s lead role in probing possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
