Perez on Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May 1, 2017
DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement at the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month:
“Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the profound contributions that members of the AAPI community have made to our culture and commerce throughout our history, and to celebrate the rich diversity they’ve added to our nation for generations while overcoming adversity, injustice, exclusion and even imprisonment.
“Today, AAPI-owned businesses employ nearly three million American workers and the AAPI community makes up the fastest-growing student population enrolling in our colleges and universities. But for too many members of the AAPI community, discrimination remains a barrier to success. That’s why Democrats are united with the AAPI community to improve our schools and public health, spur job creation and economic growth, and ensure that everyone can participate equally in our society, regardless of their ethnic or racial heritage. We will continue marching forward alongside our brothers and sisters in the AAPI community, and continue fighting to level the playing field and build an economy that works for all.”
