Republican Senators To Vote For Trump’s Tax Plan Without Seeing His Tax Returns
November 29, 2017
We know Trump and his family could gain billions from the Republican tax plan, but we won’t know exactly how much because Trump still won’t release his tax returns. Republican senators are set to vote for a massive giveaway to Trump and his wealthy friends, despite having previously called for Trump to release his taxes. The American people deserve to know how much he stands to gain, while many of their taxes increase.
Leader McConnell believed that Trump should release his tax returns like every candidate for president “for the last 30 or 40 years.”
MCCONNELL: “Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell joined the growing chorus of voices calling for Donald Trump to release his tax returns… ‘For the last 30 or 40 years, every candidate for president has released their tax returns, and I think Donald Trump should as well,’ McConnell told Business Insider on Tuesday.”
Senator Cruz called for Trump to release his tax returns and suggested there was a “bombshell” Trump was hiding.
CRUZ: “‘It's time for Trump to come clean and release his tax returns,’ Cruz said in the statement. ‘If he’s not been completely honest or has supported the most radical left-wing groups in America, voters deserve to know.’”
CRUZ: “I have put out nine years of taxes, so going back nine years. Marco Rubio has put out his taxes, and Donald Trump refuses to put out his. And as Mitt Romney rightly observed, that suggests that there is a bombshell in there that he is hiding, and he doesn’t want the voters to see.”
Senator Barrasso said Trump should release his tax returns.
BARRASSO: “John Barrasso of Wyoming, the Senate's No. 4 Republican, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on ‘The Situation Room’ that it would be a ‘good idea’ for Trump to do so, though he did not specifically call on Trump to release his returns. ‘I think it would be a good idea, but he gets to decide that. I'd rather have them released,’ Barrasso said. ‘I'm somebody's who's in favor of transparency and openness.’”
Senator Capito called on Trump to release his tax returns.
BARTIROMO: “Do you think there's a bombshell coming from Donald Trump and his taxes?” CAPITO: “You know, I really don't know, but I do think he needs to release them, and I think he needs to release them soon. I think the American public expects that, and so hopefully, you know, the pushes that are coming towards him to release him will cause him to do this. It does give you an indication of how much taxes he's been paying, what kind of charitable giving, all those kinds of things. So, I think the American people are entitled to see.” [Mornings with Maria, Fox Business, 2/25/16]
Senator Ernst said Trump should release his tax returns.
ERNST: “Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said at a town hall Friday she thinks President Trump should publicly release his tax returns. ‘Do you think the president should release his tax returns so that we know he’s acting in the best interest for the American people?’ an audience member asked her during a town hall in Linn County, Iowa. ‘I think he should; I think he should,’ Ernst responded, prompting loud cheers from the audience.”
Senator Cassidy said Trump should release his tax returns.
CASSIDY: “‘Looks like we have some folks who don’t like Donald Trump in here. A lot of us do,’ Cassidy replied, drawing applause from another group. ‘You know, I think the president should put his tax returns out there. I’m for transparency. Obviously, it’s complicated. I can’t particularly put pressure on him to do that. But nonetheless, for what it’s worth, I think it would be a good thing.’”
