Washington, D.C. – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement today in honor of Patriot Day:

“On the morning of September 11, 2001, Americans watched in disbelief as we witnessed an attack that claimed the lives of thousands of our loved ones and neighbors. Seeing the courage of the first responders who rushed to aid those in distress, our nation was roused into action to set aside our differences and come together. At one of the darkest moments in our nation’s history, our shared values shone through as a beacon of hope.

“In 2010, Democrats passed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, providing the care and support individuals affected by the 9/11 attacks deserve. But the recent passing of Marcy Borders, whose unforgettable photo served as haunting evidence of the horrors experienced that day, is a reminder that there are many of these Americans who still need our help. Congress must pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act before the funding for one of these critical programs expires at the end of this month.

“Today, we have chosen to mark this anniversary as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Thus, by working together to help others, we show our enemies that they have not weakened us, but have instead strengthened the bonds and values that are what is best about America. We must rely on that common sentiment to see us through our current and future challenges.”
