Donald Trump and Republicans have made healthcare unaffordable for millions of Americans by refusing to extend the popular enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits, hiking premiums by an average of 58%, and forcing three million people so far to drop their coverage. The average ACA marketplace deductibles increased by $1,027 per person this year to a record high of $3,786 in 2026. Now — as open enrollment approaches — Americans enrolling in the ACA marketplace could see their insurance premiums increase by 15% or more in 2027. Nearly six out of 10 employers plan to make cost-cutting changes to health benefits in 2027, including adding higher deductibles.
A new poll today found healthcare costs continues to be one of voters’ top affordability concerns, as six in 10 voters said they were worried about affording their healthcare, and more than a third of American families already have medical debt because of high costs. Heading into the midterm elections, voters trust Democrats 20 points more than Republicans to handle the cost of healthcare.
REMINDER: Before Republicans refused to extend the ACA tax credits, Trump and Republicans slashed nearly $1 TRILLION from Medicaid — the largest cut to healthcare in history — to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations.
In response, DNC Deputy Communications Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump and Republicans have made healthcare coverage unaffordable for everyday Americans, in order to pay for massive tax breaks to their billionaire buddies and ultrawealthy donors. Working families are being forced to make impossible decisions about whether to fill up at the pump, put food on the table, or pay for their medical bills. Voters know that Republicans are responsible for their rising healthcare costs. Democrats are running on lowering costs and making healthcare affordable, and are ready to deliver a major defeat to Republicans come November.”
