New reporting reveals that Donald Trump and his administration are ending Medicare Part D subsidies, raising prescription drug costs for more than 11 million Americans.
Trump administration officials have not been quiet about their goal of slashing safety net programs, even for seniors, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who called Trump Accounts a “backdoor” to privatizing Social Security.
Trump and Republicans already cut Medicaid by nearly $1 TRILLION — the largest cut to healthcare in history — which is projected to leave 15 million people uninsured when combined with other changes. Trump and Republicans also refused to extend the popular enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, forcing insurance premiums to increase by an average of 58%, and premiums are expected to spike by double digits again in 2027. Millions of people who enrolled in health insurance through HealthCare.gov this year were already dropped from coverage for failing to pay their first month’s premium.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump and Republicans are doing everything they can to make healthcare unaffordable for Americans, especially for seniors. Trump and Republicans’ massive healthcare cuts have pushed working families to the brink as they grapple with skyrocketing insurance premiums, even bigger medical bills, and rising prescription drug costs. Americans are taking on record amounts of medical debt just to make ends meet — all while Trump and his family get even richer and his wealthy donors rake in tax cuts.”
