DNC Applauds Maryland Leaders for Calling Special Session on Protecting Voting Rights

On Tuesday, Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson and Maryland House Speaker Joseline Peña-Melnyk announced that the state’s General Assembly will convene for a special session on redistricting next month. The announcement comes after more than a half dozen Republican states advanced Donald Trump’s desperate power grab by ramming through rigged maps that weaken voting rights and attack fair representation.

In response to Maryland Democrats calling a special session, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“From Texas and Tennessee to Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and beyond, Republican-controlled states have enacted rigged maps that erase Black representation, weaken voting rights, and wage an all-out assault on our democracy. At the order of a deeply unpopular president, Republicans orchestrated a coordinated power grab in a desperate attempt to cling to power in the midterm elections. Maryland Democrats are fighting back by going on offense and organizing to level the playing field and protect fair representation nationwide. The DNC applauds Governor Moore, Speaker Peña-Melnyk, and Senate President Ferguson for calling a special session and taking an important step towards safeguarding voting rights — in Maryland and throughout America. Democrats stand with Marylanders in this fight and the continued work to win races up and down the ballot.”
