DNC on Black Women’s Equal Pay Day

To commemorate Black Women’s Equal Pay Day – the day that marks how much longer it takes for the average Black woman to earn as much as a white man – DNC Chair Tom Perez, DNC Women’s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelford, and DNC Black Caucus Chair Virgie M. Rollins released the following statement:

“Black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party and the lifeblood of the American workforce. During this pandemic, they have been on the front lines as essential workers, risking their lives to help keep us safe. And yet, they still aren’t paid equally for their work. Time and again, Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have ignored the challenges of Black women and even rolled back policies aimed at reducing the gender pay gap.

“Joe Biden and Kamala Harris believe in equal pay for equal work, and our party stands shoulder to shoulder with Black women across the country fighting for equality in their workplaces. In fact, the very first piece of legislation enacted by the Obama-Biden administration was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. After winning in November, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will continue to prioritize the economic opportunities of women of color by working to close the pay gap and end paycheck discrmination. As Democrats, we believe that when women succeed, America succeeds. And we will keep fighting for the equal pay and dignity Black women and all working families deserve.”
