Today, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“My friend, Dolores Huerta, was living proof that anyone can rise above their station in life to change our country for the better. Born during the Great Depression in a small mining town in New Mexico, she saw firsthand how workers could be exploited on their own — yet when they joined together, they could successfully fight for better wages, safer conditions, and dignity on the job.
“Dolores was a leading figure in the founding of the United Farm Workers and in the successful Delano grape boycott that secured labor protections for seasonal workers. It is why generations upon generations of Americans have been inspired by her fierce determination and her resilient spirit in the face of impossible odds. I was proud to stand with my friend in countless fights over the years, and we will all remember how she moved our nation closer to its highest ideals. Dolores Huerta’s legacy will live on every time an organizer, a worker, or a civil rights activist repeats her eternal words, sí se puede!”
