Today, the bipartisan housing affordability bill became law without Donald Trump’s support. Trump refused to sign the legislation, saying it was “so unimportant” and a “big yawn.” Earlier this year, Trump reportedly told House Speaker Mike Johnson that “no one gives a [bleep] about housing.”
According to a recent survey, nearly 80% of Americans — including almost three-quarters of Republicans — believe there should be policies that make homes more affordable. In another poll, 79% of voters said the cost of housing is an extremely or very important issue, and nearly 90% of voters believe buying a home is harder than ever before.
In response, DNC spokesperson Jaelin O’Halloran released the following statement:
“How much more obvious could Donald Trump make it that he does not care about lowering costs for working families? As Americans stretch their wallets thin to get by in Trump’s economy, owning a home feels more out of reach than ever. But instead of supporting legislation that helps millions of Americans put a roof over their heads, Trump sided with his rich friends and wealthy donors and gave Americans the middle finger. Trump has made it clear that making life more affordable for Americans is ‘unimportant,’ while he spends his days building his vanity projects and growing his family fortune.”
The housing bill will support new efforts to combat the zoning and permitting red tape that has slowed construction of new homes and work to prevent private equity investors from pricing Americans out of the housing market.
