After Donald Trump and Republicans were roundly defeated in last night’s midterm elections, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced today that he will not seek a leadership position in the upcoming Congress. In Johnson’s letter to his conference, he touted working “shoulder-to-shoulder with President Trump” and passing their Big Ugly Bill, which made the largest cut to healthcare and food assistance in history in order to pay for tax cuts for the ultrarich.
REMINDER: Johnson repeatedly predicted Republicans would “keep and grow the House majority” and “defy history.” Johnson also admitted that if Republicans “lose the majority, it would be the end of the Trump presidency.”
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Mike Johnson’s tenure as Speaker of the House has been nothing short of a disaster for working families. Johnson has been in lockstep with Donald Trump to deliver an agenda that has hiked prices and made massive cuts to healthcare and food assistance to pay for tax handouts for the wealthy. While Johnson cowers in response to Republicans’ historically disastrous midterm performance, Democrats are ready to take the majorities in Congress and deliver change for everyday Americans — including lower costs, affordable healthcare, and an end to Republicans’ chaos and corruption.”
