Sentiment dropped most sharply among Republicans, older consumers, and lower- and middle-income consumers
According to new data released today, consumer sentiment fell 6% from last month, about 11% below a year ago, driven by continued concerns about inflation. Consumers worry that inflation will remain elevated for the foreseeable future as Donald Trump’s war with Iran drags on, causing prices to skyrocket on everything from gas to groceries to housing.
The average household has had to spend more than $3,800 extra since Trump took office, including $310 for groceries. The average price of a gallon of gas is $4.08 today, and the average household has already spent about $604 more on gas since Trump started his war.
Meanwhile, Trump is profiting from his war with Iran: Trump’s wealth exploded by as much as $15.5 million just through stocks he owned in oil and gas companies at the end of 2025.
