A new report from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) details how Trump and Republicans have made childcare even more expensive
This week, Senate Democrats released a “Broken Promises” report, which outlines how difficult it is to find affordable, high-quality childcare under Donald Trump and how Republicans have worsened the childcare crisis by cutting funding for childcare and early childhood education while handing out massive tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations.
In April, Trump said, “We can’t take care of daycare. We’re a big country. We have fifty states, we have all these other people, we’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of daycare.”
As Americans struggle with rising prices on everything from groceries to gas to healthcare because of Trump’s agenda, the national average cost of childcare in 2025 reached $13,184 per year. Over 4 million children lack access to a formal childcare slot in their local community and 46% of children under the age of six live in a childcare desert. In most states, childcare is now more expensive than the average in-state college tuition. It’s no wonder 80% of voters say the ability to find and afford childcare is “a major problem” or is in a “state of crisis.”
Trump and Republicans have done nothing to address the childcare crisis and instead have taken a wrecking ball to federal programs and infrastructure that help American families access affordable, high-quality childcare.
Meanwhile, Democrats are focused on making childcare more affordable for working families and addressing the cost-of-living crisis Trump and Republicans have created, including rising housing costs, historic food and grocery prices, skyrocketing energy costs, and cuts to healthcare.
