The White House today announced that Donald Trump’s Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon has resigned. Dhillon is the first administration official to resign after the midterm elections on Tuesday, in which Trump and Republicans were resoundingly rebuked by the American people.
Dhillon — one of Trump’s former personal lawyers — upended the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice (DOJ) to pursue Trump’s personal and political agenda, and during her tenure, more than 75% of the division’s staff departed. Attorney General Todd Blanche and Dhillon declined to open a civil probe into the fatal shooting of Renee Good, and Dhillon dismissed police reform efforts for police departments in Kentucky and Minnesota after the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Dhillon backed Trump’s lies about the 2020 election and when running her private law firm, she launched litigation against multiple states, trying to overturn voter protections.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Harmeet Dhillon will be the first of many Trump-Vance administration officials who resign in disgrace after Republicans were humiliated in the midterm elections this week. Dhillon was an executor of Donald Trump’s toxic agenda, leveraging her position to achieve Trump’s personal and political interests instead of fighting for the American people. Now that voters have spoken and there’s no more denying that Americans are outraged by this administration, Dhillon is fleeing — but Americans won’t forget that she was one of Trump’s most loyal foot soldiers.”
