The jobs report released today from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that Donald Trump’s failed economic agenda has cost 23,000 jobs in July, far worse than economists’ expectations of an 80,000 job gain. The jobs numbers for May and June were sharply revised downward by a combined -103,000, meaning that over the last three months, the economy has created about 200,000 fewer jobs than expected.
Meanwhile, wage growth is lagging at just 3.2% — failing to keep up with rising inflation.
In July, over 260,000 people left the labor force and the labor force participation rate — the share of the population that is working or looking for work — fell to 61.4%, which is the lowest level since the 1970s, excluding the pandemic. It’s no wonder seven in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump’s economy, and only 28% of U.S. workers believe it is a good time to find a quality job.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Is this the ‘Golden Age’ that Donald Trump and JD Vance keep talking about? Trump’s disastrous economic agenda has caused irreparable damage to the job market, as layoffs mount and it’s nearly impossible to find a job. Working families are already drowning under the weight of skyrocketing costs on everyday goods like groceries, gas, and healthcare, and their paychecks aren’t keeping up. Americans are barely keeping their heads above water — and Trump can’t even be bothered to care.”
