Data released today shows that under Donald Trump, a staggering 1 in 5 working-age renters, the highest on record, were unable to pay their full rent on time at some point last year. On top of that, mortgage rates rose to 7.12% last week, reaching their highest level in more than two years.
The average household has shelled out an extra $833 on housing costs, including rent and mortgage payments, since Trump took office. Yet, Trump refused to sign a bipartisan housing affordability bill, calling it “so unimportant” and a “big yawn.” Earlier this year, Trump even reportedly told House Speaker Mike Johnson that “no one gives a [bleep] about housing” — despite housing being the top political issue for young voters.
In response, DNC Deputy Communications Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump has put affording rent — let alone buying your first home — out of reach for generations of Americans. Trump’s reckless tariffs and war of choice with Iran are destroying the economy, pricing everyday Americans out of their homes, and there’s no indication there will be any relief soon. Instead of delivering on his promise to lower costs for working families, Trump is focused on spending more than a billion taxpayer dollars on vanity projects and hosting lavish dinners with his billionaire donors. Enough is enough.”
