Democrats’ Overperformance Streak Continues in Texas and Nebraska Local Elections
May 7, 2025
In response to Texas and Nebraska Democrats’ sweeping victories in down-ballot races, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Democrats are building from the ground up and, in recent days, Texas and Nebraska Democratic-aligned candidates trounced their Republican opponents in critical races that will define important aspects of both states’ futures. In the latest show of Democrats’ momentum and continued overperformance in elections, voters have spoken loud and clear: they don’t want Republicans who will simply bend the knee to Trump’s disastrous agenda to hike prices, rip away health care, and attack Social Security. As Trump and Republicans’ approval ratings continue to tank, Democrats are offering voters a powerful alternative to protect their rights and their pocketbooks. We have the momentum and we’ll continue to compete and win power everywhere we can.”
Last night, Nebraska voters elected a slate of Democratic candidates, from the city council to the school boards, further extending Democrats’ overperformance streak in 2025.
Nebraska Public Media: “Six candidates were competing for three at-large seats on the City Council […] The race is officially nonpartisan, so party affiliations do not appear on the ballot, though the three incumbents are Democrats and three challengers are Republicans.
“As of Tuesday evening, it appears incumbents Tom Beckius, Bennie Shobe and Sändra Washington will retain their seats, while challengers Maher Aurang Zeb, Jerry Shoecraft and Stan Parker have come up short.
“Democrats also swept the Board of Education elections, though, like the City Council, the office is nonpartisan and party affiliation does not appear on the ballot.”
KOLN: “Although Lincoln’s city election is officially nonpartisan, Democratic leaders are declaring victory after several registered Democrats appeared to win key races, including seats on the City Council, Lincoln Public Schools Board, and Airport Authority.”
Over the weekend, Texas Republicans suffered humiliating losses as Democrats swept school board elections across the state as voters flat-out rejected their extreme agenda.
Houston Chronicle: “In an upset victory, School Board candidate James Cross defeated incumbent Katy ISD Board President Victor Perez, according to unofficial results.”
Newsweek: “Conservative School Boards Face Election Defeats in Trump Heartland”
“Voters overhauled the Mansfield Independent School District’s board in the May 3 election, with challengers unseating three conservative incumbents.
“In the Fort Bend Independent School District, conservatives lost two board seats.
“In the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District, voters ousted conservative Tammy Nakamura and chose Matt Faust for the board.
“In the Keller Independent School District, Randy Campbell, Jennifer Erickson, and appointed incumbent Chelsea Kelley won, filling some seats that were previously held by conservative-backed members.
“In the Clear Creek Independent School District, voters elected Rebecca Lilley over incumbent Scott Bowen and reelected Jessica Cejka over challenger Joe Machol.”
Texas Tribune: “School board races across Texas deal losses for many conservatives”
“Conservative school board candidates across Texas suffered an array of defeats in Saturday’s local elections, marking a clear setback for the Republican-aligned movement to shape how grade school curriculums and library books confront issues of race, sex and gender.
“The sweeping losses for conservative school board hopefuls also served as an early sign of potential backlash to the nascent administration of President Donald Trump. …
“All seven school board candidates in contested races who were endorsed by the Tarrant County Republican Party lost their elections.”
Lone Star Left: “Maga’s Very Bad Night In Texas”
“The Tarrant County GOP went 0-for-11 in the county’s three largest cities: Fort Worth, Arlington, and Mansfield. Let that sink in. They didn’t just lose a few races. They got shut out entirely.”
