DeSantis Faces More Backlash from Florida’s Latino Community

Ron DeSantis is taking more heat for his callous stunt to use dozens of Venezuelan migrants as political props as Florida’s Latino community calls him out.

Many within the Venezuelan community in Florida have condemned DeSantis following his calculated stunt, likening the move to something Fidel Castro would do.

Politico: “‘Huge mistake’: DeSantis’ migrant transports could undercut support in South Florida”

  • “Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to transport mostly Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard earlier this week could hurt the Republican governor in November with a key constituency that the GOP has sought to win over.”
  • “The move by DeSantis dominated the radio and television airwaves in South Florida — where large swaths of Hispanic voters live. One Spanish radio host loudly denounced the move and even compared DeSantis’ actions to that of deceased Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, who relocated Cubans in the early ‘60s.”

USA Today: “Could Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ migrant tactic backfire politically with key voting bloc?”

  • “… [T]he stunt could have unplanned ramifications for DeSantis and the GOP writ large, experts told USA TODAY… The migrant relocation and subsequent silence from Republican lawmakers could have ramifications for the state’s Republican leaders who are counting on the Venezuelan vote less than two months away from November’s midterm elections.”

DeSantis’s move is a reminder for Floridians he is willing to put politics above people’s lives, even if it means cruelly misleading migrants fleeing communism.
