DNC Chair Harrison on South Carolina Democrats’ Chair Christale Spain

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement on the election of Christale Spain as South Carolina Democratic Party Chair:

“Congratulations to Christale Spain on her election as South Carolina Democratic Party Chair. Christale is a lifelong South Carolinian, a seasoned operative in our party, and has experience at every level: starting as a volunteer and working her way up to leading our state party. She has the experience, judgment, and strategic vision to get South Carolina Democrats back on the winning track and I know she will be an excellent Chair.

“This is a historic moment for the South Carolina Democratic Party. In 2024, South Carolina will lead the way as the first presidential primary. This move is a reflection of our party’s strength and diversity. In turn, it will elevate new, diverse voices that for too long had to wait until later in the process, as we re-elect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“It’s fitting that Christale’s election also means that for the first time ever, South Carolina Democrats will be led by a Black woman. With her election, four out of the five early states in the 2024 presidential nominating calendar will be led by state party chairs who are Black women, including in Nevada, Michigan, Georgia – and now South Carolina. This is historic, long overdue, and I’m grateful to President Biden and DNC members’ leadership in elevating these voices that are the backbone of our party.

“I look forward to seeing all that Christale accomplishes these next two years, and am excited for this next chapter for the South Carolina Democratic Party. Congratulations Madam Chair!”
