Despite already having one of the most-rigged maps in the country, North Carolina Republicans will move forward with another racial gerrymander after striking a backroom deal with Donald Trump

Yesterday, North Carolina Republicans announced their plan to push forward another rigged Congressional map after striking a backroom deal with Donald Trump. North Carolina Republicans are only moving forward with this plan after Donald Trump withheld an endorsement of Republican State Senate leader Phil Berger in the upcoming Republican primary, a move that successfully forced Berger to produce this rigged map.

North Carolina is already one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. Ten Republicans and only 4 Democrats represent the state in Congress, despite the fact that the state continues to elect Democrats statewide. 

Trump is trying to rig North Carolina’s map because he knows he is going to lose his Congressional majority thanks to his Tax Scam, which causes 450,000 North Carolinians to lose health care and takes food assistance away from 784,000 North Carolina families. 

DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

“North Carolina Republicans’ following the lead of Donald Trump to rig the state’s Congressional maps is corruption at its worst. Senator Phil Berger decided to secure his own dishonest backroom deal and throw North Carolinians under the bus in the process. North Carolinians deserve fair congressional maps, and Republicans’ plan to deny their own constituents won’t be tolerated by the people they were elected to represent. The DNC stands with North Carolina Democrats who are fighting tooth and nail for fair representation. We beat North Carolina Republicans already this year, and we will do it again.”
