DNC Statement on Cinco de Mayo

DNC Chair Ken Martin and DNC Vice-Chair Artie Blanco released the following statement to commemorate Cinco de Mayo:

“Cinco de Mayo commemorates a powerful moment in history—when a determined group of Mexican soldiers, outnumbered three to one, stood their ground and triumphed over Napoleon’s formidable French forces in the Battle of Puebla. That victory, rooted in resilience and unity, continues to inspire generations.

“This historic event is celebrated not only in Mexico but across the United States, where more than 37 million people of Mexican heritage have helped shape the fabric of our nation. Mexican-American communities have built businesses, raised families, enriched our culture, and strengthened our economy. Most importantly, they have made this country their home.

“Cinco de Mayo is more than a celebration—it’s a symbol  and a testament to the contributions Mexican-Americans have made since the earliest days of the United States fighting for democracy.”
