Donald Trump Says a Recession is “Okay” and Doesn’t Know if He Should Uphold the Constitution
May 4, 2025

In response to Donald Trump’s disastrous Meet the Press appearance, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Not only is Donald Trump skyrocketing costs and bringing the economy to the brink of recession, he’s also launching dangerous attacks on the rule of law. When asked if he needs to uphold the Constitution, Trump’s answer should be a resounding yes — not ‘I don’t know’ coupled with illegal plots to send American citizens to foreign prisons. Trump is hurting the American people, and Democrats are laser-focused on holding him accountable.”
Donald Trump said he’s “okay” with a recession and admitted prices will go up under his disastrous economic agenda.
Kristen Welker, NBC News: “Is it okay in the short term to have a recession?”
Donald Trump: “Look, yeah. Everything’s okay.”
…
Welker: “Are you saying that your tariffs will cause some prices to go up? … You said some dolls are going to cost more —”
Trump: “Sure — ”
Welker: “Isn’t that an acknowledgement that some prices will go up?”
…
Welker: “When you say they could have three dolls instead of thirty dolls are you saying Americans could see empty store shelves?”
Trump “do[es]n’t know” if he has to uphold the Constitution or if Americans have a right to due process.
Welker: “But even given those numbers that you’re talking about, don’t you need to uphold the Constitution of the United States as president?”
Trump: “I don’t know.”
Welker: “Your Secretary of State says everyone who’s here — citizens and non-citizens — deserve due process. Do you agree?”
Trump: “I don’t know.”
…
Welker: “Well the Fifth Amendment says as much.”
