After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Mike Kelly’s proposed federal abortion ban has gained new momentum within the MAGA Republican Party. Kelly’s “Heartbeat Protection Act” would ban abortion after six weeks — well before many people know they are pregnant — and criminalize providers, with no exceptions for rape or incest.
Since a draft opinion of the Dobbs decision was leaked in May, 59 more House Republicans have doubled down on their extremist views and signed on as cosponsors of this dangerous bill, which now has the support of a majority of the Republican caucus.
Republicans are not stopping at overturning Roe and they are making it clear that if they gain power, they could pass a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.
