MAGA Hot Mic: Reproductive Freedom To Be Banned In Idaho

As we highlight the devastating and dangerous abortion bans going into effect across the country, today’s MAGA hot moment features Idaho, where a near-total ban is scheduled to take effect tomorrow.

Idaho’s extreme trigger law, which bans nearly all abortions without exceptions for a woman’s health, is scheduled to go into effect tomorrow.

Washington Post: “Idaho’s ‘trigger’ law, which is set to take effect Thursday, bans abortions except in cases involving rape or when a woman’s life is in danger. There is no exception if a patient faces nonlethal health risks, such as a stroke or organ damage, by continuing the pregnancy.”

The law threatens health care providers with prison time for providing vital reproductive care.

NPR: “Physicians who perform abortions outside of these circumstances will be at risk of up to five years in prison. The Justice Department sued Idaho to block this law. During a court hearing on Monday, a federal judge said there seems to be an ‘absolute conflict’ between that law and federal law regulating emergency care.”

In their war against reproductive health that began long before Roe was overturned, Idaho Republicans passed another law last year banning abortions after six weeks — before many women even realize they are pregnant.

OPB: “Idaho Republican legislators passed the law last year, which bans abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. That’s before many women know they’re pregnant.”

If that weren’t extreme enough, let’s not forget there’s already a law in effect that allows some people to bring civil lawsuits against abortion providers.

NPR: “Yet another law already in effect allows potential relatives of an embryo or fetus to sue abortion providers for up to $20,000 within four years of the procedure. That policy will not be granted for rapists, but still apply for the rapists’ family members.”

Idaho Republicans are keeping their promise that overturning Roe would only be the beginning of an extreme GOP war against reproductive freedom.  A woman’s right to choose is at stake come November.
