Mike Johnson Puts Trump Above the Constitution, Calling Bipartisan War Powers Resolution “Unconstitutional”

In response to Mike Johnson refusing to consider a bipartisan war powers resolution or put it on the floor for a vote, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“By refusing to bring a war powers resolution to the House floor, Mike Johnson has totally abdicated his responsibility to uphold the Constitution and lost his backbone all to appease Donald Trump. The American people have made their voices clear — no new wars. It’s time Mike Johnson listens to his constituents, enforces the rule of law, and puts a war powers resolution up for a vote.”

NEW: After Donald Trump’s unilateral act of war, Mike Johnson is putting Trump above the Constitution by opposing a bipartisan war powers resolution in Congress and refusing to commit to putting it up for a vote.

Axios: “Mike Johnson calls War Powers Act ‘unconstitutional’”

“‘Many respected constitutional experts argue that the War Powers Act is itself unconstitutional,’ Johnson told reporters Tuesday.

“He added: ‘I’m persuaded by that argument. They think it’s a violation of the Article 2 powers of the commander in chief. I think that’s right.’”

Reuters: “US House Speaker Johnson says it is not time to consider war powers resolution”

“Asked whether he would allow the House of Representatives to vote on a bipartisan resolution, Johnson told reporters: ‘I don’t think this is an appropriate time for a war powers resolution, and I don’t think it’s necessary.’ …

“Iran’s military said on Monday that it carried out a missile attack on U.S. forces in Qatar, where explosions were heard across the capital.”

New York Times: “[Last night] the Israeli military said it had struck missile launchers in western Iran that had been poised to fire at Israel. Iran launched at least four barrages of ballistic missiles at Israel. At least four people were killed when a missile hit an apartment building in the southern city of Beersheba. In Tehran, residents said they endured a night of the heaviest airstrikes since the war began June 13.”

Trump unilaterally bombed Iran — an act of war — without congressional approval, without notifying key national security leaders in Congress, and STILL hasn’t briefed Congress.

“[A]t least two GOP lawmakers joined Democrats across the party spectrum in suggesting it was unconstitutional for him to bomb Iran without approval from Congress.”
